Textbook Media Press is expanding its mathematics offerings with new textbooks by Randall J. Swift, alongside Donald W. Trim’s established texts in complex analysis and differential equations. Together with the Field Guide Series for Mathematics, the program now comprises 18 offerings: five textbooks and 13 Field Guides.

The books give instructors several distinct approaches to undergraduate mathematics, from a first course in counting or probability to the study of stochastic models and differential equations.

Three textbooks by Randall J. Swift

Essential Combinatorics is a compact working course in counting methods. It begins with the sum and product rules, permutations, and combinations, then develops tools including inclusion–exclusion, generating functions, and recurrence relations. The text assumes no previous course in combinatorics or discrete mathematics and returns to familiar examples as new methods become available.

Problems and Explorations in Probability places problem solving at the center of a first undergraduate probability course. Its 500 problems move from direct applications to conceptual questions and proofs, with an answer, hint, or worked solution for every problem. Continuing examples connect counting, conditioning, distributions, and later developments in the subject.

Stochastic Processes: Models, Methods, and Explorations develops probability models that evolve over time. Its coverage includes Markov chains, random walks, branching processes, Poisson and renewal processes, and applications in reliability, insurance risk, and epidemic modeling.

Swift is a professor of mathematics and department chair at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. His books reflect an interest in helping readers connect mathematical methods with the questions that make those methods useful.

The expanded list also includes Trim’s Introduction to Complex Analysis and Its Applications, Second Edition, which develops complex analysis through the relationships among differentiation, integration, and infinite series, with applications throughout.

His Theory and Applications of Ordinary Differential Equations combines theory, technique, and applications for undergraduate study, with material in partial differential equations for further coursework.

Resources for a wider STEM program

The 13-topic Field Guide Series for Mathematics complements the textbook list with concise resources for learning, reference, and practice. Our STEM catalog also includes three biology titles: General Biology I, General Biology II, and General Zoology.

Instructors can explore contents and sample material on the individual book pages, then request an instructor review copy for course consideration.
